Types of Search Engines
Let us look at types of search engines.
Mainly we can mention following 5 types of Search engines
1. Crawler Based Search Engines
2. Directories
3. Hybrid Search Engines
4. Meta Search Engines
5. Vertical Search Engines
1. Crawler Based Search Engines
This type of search engines uses automated programs called crawler/bots/robots/spiders to analysis and categorize web pages.
A crawler will find a web page, download it and analyse the information on that page. This is a endless process.
So in Crawler based search engines always search the web for new pages and keep update their database with these new or altered pages.
Example for Crawler Based Search Engines are Google, Bing, Ask etc.
2. Directories
Here you can see different web site links in categorized manner. You can see different categories like Arts, Business, Health, Sports etc and under that different sub categories too. So People can submit web pages manually for Appropriate category/sub category. A human editor review it and approve the listings(Now a days some directories use automated tools to instant approval)

3. Hybrid Search Engines
This type of search engines use both crawler results and directoy results. Google and Yahoo are Example for this. Nowadays Most of search engines converting as hybrid search engines.
4. Meta Search Engines
In this type of search engines they display results from all other search engines. Dogpile is one example for Meta Search Engines.
5. Vertical Search Engines
This type of search engines developed to serve for some niche areas
